So...the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had decided to delay the removal of the Hero until at least April...or perhaps May or June...when water levels and surge conditions would be more manageable...the removal contract was awarded to Ballard Marine Construction in late 2021 as described here. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to attempt to salvage and recover any appropriate and available artifacts, by the Antarctican Society. The Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine, has expressed an interest in taking, curating, and exhibiting any appropriate relics. Here is the 22 February 2022 Chinook Observer article which describes the Antarctican Society's involvement in preserving the vessel's legacy, based on an interview with good friend Charles Lagerbom. Recovery and removal began in early July...and artifact transportation funds were requested and received (!) to cover transportation costs. |
