Okay, it is now late spring 2005 (in the Northern Hemisphere) and Tom DeVries stopped by the Newport waterfront with his camera. Tom
was the chief scientist on two cruises (Peninsula Valdez, Argentina in 1981, and Chonos Archipelago, Chile in 1983). This is what he saw...

At left, another view of the starboard side...she was
being used for storage, with no public access.
![]() Ulp...at some point after that, in October 2006, I was an honorary member of the Palmer Team 77 reunion in, guess where. It seems that there was 100% attendance of the surviving winterovers! More on that later, but anywhere, here is my picture of where we got together. ![]() Tom reports:"I returned to Newport, OR, this July (2008). The R/V Hero was not at its former dock; the docks themselves seemed reorganized, and all the berths taken by out-of-work salmon boats. Farther up Yaquina Bay, however, near the LNG tank, was the familar green hull, at anchor." (...thanks Tom for the pictures!) |
